Shooting Picasso by Vanna Tessier

The 9/11 surprise attack on the World Trade Center creates unimaginable chaos and grief in New York City. Ruthless opportunists try to take advantage of the ensuing panic, but a promising young reporter known for her no-holds-barred story-chasing hunts them down and soon finds herself at the heart of a criminal underworld.

How deep into that underworld, and her own past, is she willing to go? And more importantly, will she have the strength to face a drastic life change?

Inside the airplane, a swarthy man rushes out of the restroom. Concealing a razor knife within his fist, he stomps along the aisle. A lean-faced flight attendant stretches out one arm.

“Slow down. Take it easy. It’s not safe to run around here,” she says to him.

Jerking back his left arm, he grabs the slender flight attendant and shakes her.

“Quiet!” he shouts. He rams his razor knife against her throat. She fights back and scratches his face, leaving the red marks of her nails on his bristly cheeks. He pounds on her shoulder, shoving her against the side of a seat. Frowning, he threatens everyone with his razor knife.

One of the passengers, a sturdy man in a checkered shirt, pushes his briefcase against the attacker’s legs. The hijacker turns around tripping over the briefcase. The flight attendant frees herself from the terrorist’s grip.

The hijacker regains his balance. “I have a bomb here.” He opens his blazer and he points to the bomb strapped to his waist. “Do as you’re told or you’ll get into trouble,” the hijacker warns with his harsh voice. His short, cropped hair can’t hide a few bald patches on the back of his pear-shaped head.

The husky passenger springs up and, with both hands, he circles the hijacker’s thick neck and squeezes it tight. The terrorist’s face becomes purple and his eyes seem to pop out of their sockets. He grimaces and stabs the passenger whose bulky body shakes in convulsion. A dark red stain of blood spreads, soaking through the passenger’s checkered shirt. The man gasps for air and flops back down onto his seat, his head lolling on his shoulders.

Shannon's Law by Emma Calin - Launch Day

Wild child inner city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. When she encounters signs of people and drug trafficking she homes in on serious millionaire criminals.  As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need.  Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl's bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet.  Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her. All the same, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission, their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.

Author's note: This book is quite 'strongly flavoured' and features uninhibited, but straightforward steamy sexual scenes between consenting adults and true-to-life street language that would occur in high-stress situations.

My Review

This series is just amazing.  The writing delivered from Jennifer is nearly flawless and so refreshingly original.  And while I do not normally enjoy the first person narrative switching back and forth between two people, I have to say that I actually enjoyed being inside both Rema's and Darmik's heads.  It really helps to understand exactly what is going on in two different places, and the sacrifices that have to be made by Darmik.

I also feel that I need to address the elephant in the room... The cliff hanger.  Yes, I know. They are horrible and the bane of everyone's existences.  Authors write them into their stories just to break our hearts right when they start to feel full of love and a happily ever after.  I have to admit, though, that I have never read a story with a better written cliff hanger.  It isn't horrible, there is just enough closure that you aren't wondering if someone's life is hanging in the balance (coughthefirstbookcough), but you finish the last sentence and just long for one more chapter. Just one!  This one was almost heart wrenching. Something amazing is going to happen, and right when the perfect moment strikes something happens to prevent it.  Well, it is an uprising/revolution so there is always something waiting to step in and ruin a perfectly good moment.  But I digress, had it ended differently with a pretty little bow on top it would not have had the same effect; and that, my friends, is good writing.

Needless to say Jennifer Davis has delivered an amazing story, once again, and I am aching in my chest to get more.  You end up emotionally invested in the lives of her characters, they are your closest friends, they are your brothers and sisters, they are you.  When something happens to them you can feel their pain in your gut.  Fantastic job.  Now we just have to wait for the last book.  Sigh.

Joseph, wake up, wake up, wake up...

She says it over and over. It's her mantra, her prayer, her plea. But life doesn't stop while he's sleeping. With a newborn baby in her arms, Rosa's thrown into a new world, with new rules and a philosophy that sounds too good to be true. She's sure they didn't rescue her out of the goodness of their hearts. The Survivors must want something in return.

The Wall finds Rosa eagerly entering a new life, yet struggling to keep the demons and ghosts of the past from dragging her backwards. She's left so many people behind.

There's freedom in the Survivors' world, more than she'd ever dreamed of, but there's also secrets. The darkest of which pulls Rosa headfirst into a trauma, forcing her to reevaluate her past and pushing her to make a choice that threatens to destroy the tenuous, sewn-together family she's built on the outside.

To continue the journey, lookout for book three of the four book Woodlands Series, titled The Wounded to be released in February 2014!

My Review

I was so excited to get my hands on The Wall after reading The Woodlands.  Lauren Taylor created a wonderful world based on what we currently know and I swear I could see it in my head.  After the cliff hanger at the end of the first book I was dying to find out what happened to Joseph and if he was able to pull through or not.

I'm going to leave that information out, but I have to say that the second book was even better than the first, and the cliff hanger at the end was by far better than the first.  I know, cliff hangers suck; but trust me when I say it was the perfect place to end this story!  It leaves you wanting more, with just enough closure

Who am I kidding?  I wish I would have waiting for the next book to come out before I read this one! lol

I am anticipating that The Wounded is going to be exceptional.  I cannot wait to see what happens with Rosa, Joseph, and the rest of the gang. Including some people from the past who we thought weren't going to be in the future...

About Lauren Nicolle Taylor

Daughter of a Malaysian nuclear physicist father and an Australian doctor mother, Lauren Nicolle Taylor was expected to follow the science career path. And she did, for a while, completing a Health Science degree with Honors in obstetrics and gynecology. But there was always a niggling need to create which led to many artistic adventures.

Lauren married her high school sweetheart at 24. They had their first child the following year. The next six years of her life were taken up with caring for her three children. She found out early on that being a parent could be as devastating as it is wonderful. Her first two children developed life-threatening conditions. At four weeks her son developed pyloric stenosis and two years later, at eight months of age, her daughter contracted meningococcal disease. Many surgeries and some very scary hospital stays later Lauren's third child was born and her parents cross their fingers and thank the gods that, so far, she hasn't needed any life-saving surgery! Her son (8) and two daughters (6) and (3) are now happy, mostly healthy and extremely boisterous.

When Lauren hit her thirties and her children's health problems began to settle, she started throwing herself into artistic endeavors, but was not entirely satisfied. The solution: Complete a massive renovation and sell their house so they could buy their dream block of land and build. After selling the house, buying the block and getting the plans ready, the couple discovered they had been misled and the block was undevelopable. This left the family of five homeless.

Taken in by Lauren's parents, with no home to renovate and faced with a stressful problem with no solution, Lauren found herself drawn to the computer. She sat down and poured all of her emotions and pent up creative energy into writing The Woodlands.

Family, a multicultural background and a dab of medical intrigue are all strong themes in her writing. Lauren took the advice of 'write what you know' and twisted it into a romantic, dystopian adventure!

Huh? I'm not sure what you mean Mr. Squirrel. Oh wait… You want a book girlfriends quiz?

Well yeah, I mean obviously squirrels can have girlfriends… Well, at least it would make sense and all. We didn't leave the book girlfriend quiz out of this because we didn't think squirrels could have girlfriends. We didn't create a book girlfriend quiz because we just didn't think that guys would really want to fill out a questionnaire about their fictional book girlfriends. Are we wrong? Does the average guy… or squirrel… enjoy taking quizzes?

Okay then! So now that we are clear that Clean Teen Publishing does not discriminate against squirrels, nor do we believe that squirrels can't have girlfriends, let's get to the good stuff!
