House of the Rising Sun
(Crescent City #1)
Augustine lives the perfect life in the Haven city of New Orleans. He rarely works a real job, spends most of his nights with a different human woman, and resides in a spectacular Garden District mansion paid for by retired movie star Olivia Goodwin, who has come to think of him as an adopted son, providing him room and board and whatever else he needs.
But when Augustine returns home to find Olivia's been attacked by vampires, he knows his idyllic life has comes to an end. It's time for revenge—and to take up the mantle of the city's Guardian.
My Review
I absolutely love this new series! I have always been a fan of stories that take place in NOLA because there is already so much culture to build on, but Kristen Painter has added a completely new (to me) culture and has done so superbly. I love the war between vampire and fae. I will officially be drowning myself in the Comarre series to hold me over until I can finally read the next book in this series.
Augustine is such a great male role. He is loyal, sometimes probably to a fault, but I wouldn't have him any other way! Harlow is such a Whiny McWhinerson - but I kind of love that about her. She may whine and gripe, but she has sass and will not take crap from anyone. That is exactly the kind of female lead I love in a story. I am tired of reading a book with a female lead that is whiny and does nothing for herself. If I wanted that I would read a Disney fairy tale. Also, I cannot leave out Olivia and Lally. They are probably my favorite supporting characters in a book. Ever. If they were real I'd hope they would have a mint julep with me!
I cannot wait to see what happens next in City of Eternal Night!
